In firearms and militaria, the term Winchester refers today to the type of rifle developed in the nineteenth century by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, rather than to antique rifles necessarily by that brand. Out of business since 2006, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded in 1886 and was based in New Haven Connecticut.

Originally an offshoot of Messrs. Smith & Wesson’s original partnership, the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, which Oliver Winchester took over when he became primary stockholder. Among the most famous antique Winchester lever-action rifles are the Winchester Model 1866, Winchester Model 1873, Model 1876, Model 1892, Model 88, Model 9422, in addition to repeating shotguns and bolt action rifles.

Historians document 5 specific types of rifles and developments as being instrumental.
