Antique Victor Horta Furniture
Victor Horta (1861-1947) was a Belgian architect and designer who laid the foundations for modern architecture by rejecting historical styles and embracing new materials.
Victor Horta first introduced into architecture the dynamic “whiplash” style known as the Art Nouveau. Horta's Hôtel Tassel in Brussels in 1892-3 is a landmark monument in the development of the style in architecture and the decorative arts. It is recognized as the first to introduce the Art Nouveau style into architecture.
Horta was a strong influence on the architect Hector Guimard who spread the style in France and abroad. Horta lived on to develop new styles and design modes after he discovered that the Art Nouveau was too expensive and impractical in the ever evolving world of architecture. He designed the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels with classical style references, even using clustered columns during the years 1919 and 1923.
An even more extensive building program, and highly rational system was expressed in the Brussels-Central Railway Station. Designs were begun in 1913 but took many years to materialize. The station was still unfinished at his death in 1947. The station was opened after his colleagues completed Horta’s plans in 1952. In 1932, King Albert I of Belgium conferred onto Horta the title of Baron for his services to architecture. Four of Horta's buildings have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
