The Towle silver company traces its origins back to the Moulton silversmiths of Newburyport, Massachusetts and thereby makes the claim that this firm had the longest continuous span of silversmithing in any American family-- for some two hundred years. A portion of the pedigree descends from William Moulton IV (1771-1861) who had two apprentices: Anthony Francis Towle and William P. Jones.

The Moulton’s siver busiess was sold to Towle and Jones in 1857 whereupon the Company name reflected that partnership. In 1873, the son of Anthony, Edward Bass Towle joined the company and the name became A.F. Towle & Son. In 1882 the company became known as the Towle Manufacturing Company. The name was eventually changed again to Towle Silversmiths.

Towle was especially recognized for its antique sterling silver patterns on flatware. In 1990, Towle Silversmiths was acquired by Syratec Inc, a holding company that also owned Wallace Silversmiths, the International Silver Co.

In 2006 Lifetime Brands, Inc purchased Syratech Inc., thus acquiring rights to the brand names of three silversmithing companies in the U.S.
