Antique Chinese table screens are small decorative objects intended for display and formal use during meals and tea ceremonies. Table screens usually consist of one to two panels that are made from a combination of precious timber and other materials. The decoration on one panel will usually correspond to the narrative on the other. The design of some table screens, such as those made incorporating rhinoceros horn or rare mushroom species, simply highlights the beauty of the material in question. The most common table screens are made from porcelain, zitan, jade and other hard stones.

A rare Linghzhi fungus table screen made during the Quing dynasty achieved $10,755 on the auction block at an Asian art auction at Christie’s in September 2003. For a complete list of Chinese table screens for sale, visit our upcoming Asian Art Auctions.
