The Steuben Glass Works is an American art glass firm founded in 1903 by Fredrick C. Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning New York. At the time, Hawkes owned the largest cut glass firm operating in Corning. He convinced Carder, an English-trained glass maker and designer for Stevens and Williams, to move to Corning and manage a new factory. The Steuben Glass Works began operation in October, 1903 with Carder managing the company. See more about Frederick Carder in his individual glass artist bio. In or about 1933 Carder was transferred to Art Director, Corning Glass Works where he continued his experiments with colored glass. Thereafter Steuben made mostly sculptural colorless art glass under the direction of Arthur Houghton who became the President of Steuben from 1933-2008.
