Generally, antique skeleton clocks are enclosed in a glass or crystal case to provide clear viewing of the mechanisms.

Skeleton wristwatches feature a clear back made typically of crystal. Some skeleton clocks feature elaborate and decorated mechanisms while others simply display the gears.
