One of the most important and functional parts of the dining room, a sideboard refers traditionally to a wide chest of drawers or case piece on legs with ample cupboard space and drawers under its top that serves both storage and serving in the dining room. Some antique sideboards have a gallery at the back or a raised platform at the back to provide space for knife boxes candelabra, and other articles necessary or useful for dining. Antique sideboards became an important piece of domestic furniture during the Federal Period in America when the Dining Room became a standard feature of the home.
