Sebastian Münster (1489-1552) was one of the most influential geographers of the 16th-century and the first mapmaker to produce separate maps of the four known continents. In 1540, he published a Latin edition of Ptolemy's text "Geographia" and accompanied the text with 48 woodblock maps. While many of the antique maps were updated reproductions of earlier maps, some of them depicted the new cartographic discoveries since Ptolemy's original publication. In 1544, Münster published his cardinal work, the "Cosmographia Universalis," which is regarded as the first German description of the known world. This text was extremely popular, and 46 editions, with antique maps printed from the original woodblocks, were published in various languages until the beginning of the 17th-century.
