Vintage Salvatore Ferragamo Shoes
Luxury goods company Salvatore Ferragamo was founded in Florence, Italy in 1928. The brand specializes in shoes, leather goods and ready-to-wear for both genders. The revenue of the company was reported at €354 million in 2009.
Salvatore Ferragamo lived in Boston and California where he made shoes for Hollywood stars and movie sets before returning to Italy in 1927. The company struggled during the Great Depression and declared bankruptcy but rebounded by 1938. Salvatore Ferragamo passed away in 1960, but the company was continued by his widow, Wanda, and is currently owned by his children and grandchildren. Ferragamo is noted for its innovations in design and materials.
Salvatore Ferragamo studied the anatomy of the feet in an effort to design more comfortable footwear. Wedge-shaped heels, shell-shaped sole, metal heels and sculpture heels were signatures of Ferragamo design. Marilyn Monroe popularized metal enforced stiletto heels. Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Andy Warhol, Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher were fans of vintage Ferragamo shoes.
Signature designs include the Cage Heel, ‘Vara’ ballet pump and the Ferragamo bag. Auction highlights include a pair of vintage Ferragamo stilettos owned by Marilyn Monroe sold at Christie’s New York on October 27, 1999 for $48,300, exceeding the expected price of $4,000-$6,000.
