Richard Satava Glass
Rick Satava is a contemporary glassblower who was introduced to the field in 1969, while attending Ocean High School in Pacifica, California. Thereafter, he attended the College of San Mateo and California State University, Chico, where he further developed his skills and understanding of glass craftsmanship by serving as a technician in their glass shop. His own studio, called Satava Art Glass, was established in Northern California in 1977. Satava’s early glass work reflected the art nouveau style that was popular with glass workers of the 20th century. However, within a few years he discovered his own “voice” as an artist; his style was inspired by designs observed in nature, such as floral and nautical, but he was also inspired by Native American drawings.
In the 1990s Satava became inspired by ocean life and maritime themes, making glass pieces with images of the Moon Jellyfish and creating forms inspired by nautilus shells. The Moon Jellyfish has become one of his most successful creations and is eagerly collected by glass enthusiasts around the globe. Each antique work is signed, dated and numbered, making Satava work easy to identify.
