Qianlong Period (1736-1795)
Qianlong (1711-1799) is the fourth Qing emperor after the conquest of China, and his 60-year reign was one of the longest in the history of China. His rule was marked by prosperity and stability, which was the legacy of two enlightened and extremely hardworking despots, his grandfather Emperor Kangxi (1654-1722), who ruled for 61 years, and his father Emperor Yongzheng (1678- 1735). The reigns of these 3 emperors are now known as the Kang Qian Sheng Shi – literally, “the flourishing period from Kangxi to Qianlong”.
Emperor Qianlong considered himself to be the one to preserve and to restore the cultural heritage of classical China. He was a prolific poet and an avid collector of jades, bronzes, paintings and porcelain, amongst many other things, and he merged some of the greatest private collections of the 17th-century into his imperial collection.
Encouraged by the Emperor’s passion for beautiful craftsmanship, the Qianlong period became one of the finest period of art production in Chinese history. Due to the high standards of that period, objects dated from this era generally are of fine quality and sophisticated style.
