Pocket watches date back to the 16th century, but were not mass produced until the 19th century. A little known fact is that the development of the railroad in the United States led to mass adoption of pocket watches. Pocket watches really were the only type of watch until the advent of the wristwatch. Wristwatches were invented after World War I.

There are two styles of antique pocket watches; hunter case pocket watches and open face pocket watches. The open face style had no cover to protect the pocket watch; the hunter case style featured a metal cover. Another main component of antique pocket watches is an attached chain. The chain helped prevent pocket watches from dropping.

Antique Pocket watches are valuable to collectors for their intrinsic value, as well as for their materials and design. Many pocket watches contained gold casing and those are particularly valuable these days. Antique pocket watches in excellent condition made by a popular manufacturer command thousands of dollars at auction and/or private sale. A number of current watch brands continue to manufacture pocket watches; August Steiner, Gino Franco, Stuhrling and Victorinox are today's top pocket watch brands.
