In natural history, obsidian refers to the black volcanic material produced when rapidly cooling lava to form glass crystals. Man’s relationship with Obsidian traces back to the earliest known examples of arrowheads, flints and other tools from stone-age culture, when man first recognized the strength of this material and how easy it is to carve for various purposes. Obsidian is found wherever volcanic activity has taken place, and appears at auction in the form of jewelry, blades, arrowheads, flints, birdpoints and other tools. Rainbow obsidian, which displays a particularly beautiful pattern of multilayered colors, often commands considerably higher prices, especially depending on the pattern that is formed. Obsidian flints are usually relatively affordable artifacts, ranging in price from $25 to $100 each.
