Mantel clocks are distinguished from other chamber clocks in that they lack a carrying handle. Mantel clocks, true to their name, antique ones were generally placed a shelf or mantel. The clocks are generally decorative and ornate to suit their setting. Decorative shape and style varies and include painted scenes, sculptural fixtures and elaborate carving. Antique mantel clocks were most popular between the years 1810 and 1858. The antique French Empire-style pieces are among those most valued by collectors for their elaborate decoration and Neoclassical motifs. Auction highlights include a Louis XVIII Ormulu-Mounted Sevres antique porcelain Mantel Clock sold at Christie’s New York on May 20, 2008 for $409,000 and a German Emerald, Diamond and Enamel-Set Silver-Gilt Mantel Clock sold by Christie’s London on December 10, 2009 for $665,850.
