Leica Camera AG was founded in Germany in 1913 and is best known for the Leica Camera portion of the company. The Leica company also operates Leica Geosystems, a geosurvey equipment company, and Leica Microsystems, a microscope company.

The company’s name is derived from the founder’s name, Ernst Leitz II. The company began by making cameras intended for landscape photography. Leica was the first to manufacture a practical 35 mm camera, the Leica I. The Leica II and III were introduced in the years preceding World War II.

In the 1960's Leica began producing single lens reflex cameras (SLRs). Leica is recognized for the following innovations: a-spherical production lenses, multicoated lenses and rare earth lenses created by Leica helped to pioneer the camera industry. Leica cameras are popular for street photography and natural light photography. Noted photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson was known for using a Leica. A vintage Leica camera, M3 model, sold by Christie’s London on November 22, 2006 fetched $13,680.
