Konya is the capital of Konya province in central Turkey. The term Konya rug refers to rugs made in the Konya province of Turkey, including the regions of Dauac, Kesismuslu, Karapinan, Obruk and Tashpinar. The region is well known for the production and export of carpets to Europe during the Renaissance. Prior to the Renaissance, mention of Konya carpets was made by Marco Polo in the late 13th century. The carpets were viewed as symbols of wealth in Renaissance Europe.

Konya rugs are characterized by bold, tribal designs and bright colors. In older Konya rugs, yellow and terracotta is usually used for the weft, or the working yarn inserted above and below the warp yarns strung on a loom. In contemporary Konya rugs, red is generally used for the weft. Hexagons and schematic figures are often depicted. The Memling Guls motif is a geometric medallion motif commonly used in Konya rugs. Konya rugs are beloved by scholars and collectors alike for their historical and aesthetic qualities. Though the rugs are generally loosely woven, they are simultaneously durable and luxurious thanks to the wool from the Konya province.

Auction highlights include an antique Konya Prayer Rug sold by Christie’s London on February 14, 2001 for $25,556 and a Konya rug sold by Sotheby’s New York on December 14, 2001 for $22,600, pictured above.
