Antique Kidney Shaped Desks

In British and American furniture, a 'kidney shaped' desk, as it is commonly called, is a piece of writing furniture with a rounded or U-shaped front designed to accommodate the sitter. Kidney shaped desks had their early development in continental and French furniture of the eighteenth century, but became more clearly kidney shaped when the popularity of curvilinear design rose in early decades of twentieth century. Antique kidney shaped desks typically have a central opening with flanking drawers, much like the straight fronted bureau desks of the eighteenth century and later.
