Antique Khorosan Rugs
Khorosan rugs are those made in the region of Khorosan in Iran. The Khorosan region boasts a long history of carpet weaving and the craft flourished under the Safavid dynasty. Herat carpets are a type of Khorosan carpet. Khorosan rugsfeature repetitive patterns of lattice, vegetation and arabesques.
The technique commonly used is jufti asymmetrical knotting. The color palette is not bright, but rather focuses on red, blue, mustard and brown. The majority of the rugs are made of wool, though some feature wool and cotton.
Auction highlights include an antique Persian wool rug from Khorosan sold by I.M. Chait in Beverly Hills on July 12, 2009 for $2,750.
