Karabagh or Karabakh rugs are made in Azerbaijan and Armenia, named from the Karabagh region. In the region of Karabagh, carpet weaving was traditionally a female occupation, though there have been some well-known male weavers as well. Karabagh carpets date to 13th century, but the rugs became especially popular in the 19th century. The town of Shusha was regarded as the center of carpet weaving in the region. Carpets, carpet bags and coverlets were produced.

Karabagh rugs are known for their dense, thick quality, due to the wool from the local sheep. Bright, vivid colors and flower and vegetable motifs are popular. The shape is generally oblong, mimicking the shapes of the rooms in traditional Karabagh houses. Traditional Karabagh rugs often came in sets with a cohesive composition as part of a dowry.

Auction highlights include a Karabagh Kelleh sold by Christie’s London on October 27, 2010 for £18,750, double the expected maximum price of £9,000.
