Johann Baptist Homann
Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) founded the Homann publishing firm in 1702, which became the most prominent and prolific publisher within Germany. Because of his reputation and success, Homann was appointed the prestigious post of Imperial Cartographer by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the VI in 1715, a title that granted Homann access to the latest cartographic information along with the "Privilege", a limited copyright. All of the Homann maps printed between 1715 and 1730 thus bear the inscription "Cum Priviligio" or its variations. The distinctive style of Homann maps is characterized by heavy detailed engraving, elaborate allegorical cartouche work, and vivid hand-coloring.
Following Homann's death in 1724, his son Johann Christoph Homann (1703-1730) took over the management of the firm. After the death of J.S. Homann, the firm only publish under the name Homann Heirs until 1848.
