Hamadan, Hamedan or Amedan, as spellings vary, is a type of oriental rug named for a city in Iran, 300 kilometers west of Teheran. Hamadan is an ancient city and associated with the biblical Esther. As with many Persian rugs, when the name of the type of rug does not refer to a nomadic tribe or group, it usually refers not to the place where the rug was made, but more often to the closest major market town were the rugs are traded.

As in the case of rugs made in Hamadan province, rugs made in Hosseinabad, Malayer, Tuiserkan and Nahavand are also for this reason considered Hamadan carpets. Though distinct from each other these largely share the same bias to intricate geometrical patterns against bright and saturated grounds. Central medallions and reticulated design elements appear to be more common than floral or animal motifs.

For interior decoration and everyday use Hamadan rugs are an excellent quality solution on account of their durability and bright colors, which tend to last decades on account of their natural vegetable dyes.
