Gillow
The renowned English furniture firm Gillow was a well respected company in Lancaster, producing high quality furniture made from West Indies Mahogany. The firm was founded during the 18th century by Robert Gillow, who had been working as a ship carpenter when he brought a shipment of West Indies mahogany to Lancaster, supposedly one of the first imports of mahogany to the United Kingdom. The Gillows Company was born when Robert Gillow began using this exotic wood to make elegant, unique furniture.
Gillows furniture gained popularity in the United Kingdom and abroad. The company expanded when Gillow’s sons joined the company, increasing production and allowing the company to expand. British royalty, cruise lines, presidents and museums were collecting and commissioning Gallows furniture throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Gillows became so profitable and productive that the company owned its own fleet, which was used to ship furniture to the colonies, where Gillows furniture was in high demand. Gillow's ideas and innovations would lead to the invention of new forms of furniture, such as the billiards table and the telescopic dining table, which has removable table leaves that can added or subtracted to change the length of the table.
During the early 20th century Gillows produced goods for the military, such as munitions boxes. Although the company was bought and closed in the 1960’s, Gillow's furniture still remains coveted today because the innovation and quality of Gillow's furniture set the standard of for well-crafted furniture.
