Pronounced 'gava' in Kurdish languages, Gabbeh refers to to the 'raw', 'uncut' state of the wool which lends itself to the construction of beautiful, often whimsical Gabbeh carpets.

Gabbeh rugs are unlike most Persian rugs in that they are especially thick, coarse, often measuring over an inch in thickness. Because the materials used are not relatively costly or rare, Gabbeh rugs often provide the space for fantastic animals and narrative designs. Gabbeh are sturdy, good quality primitive rugs made for domestic use and not for pomp or ornament. Depending on the interest and quality of the design element, Gabbeh rugs often perform well at auction, and along with all forms of kilim, exceptional examples are in ever increasing demand.

The market for contemporary Persian rugs has not escaped the artisans of Gabbeh either, and Gabbeh rugs are produced until this day, though in diminished volume. A contemporary Gabbeh runner from South Iran fetched $563 at Doyle New York on January 14, 2009, revealing collectors will always pay top dollar for quality at auction.
