The crossbow is an ancient instrument, developed in Europe in the middle ages primarily for defense, though still in use today among hunters for game and target practice.

Simply, a cross bow is a projectile weapon consisting of a bow, mounted or fastened by some means to a stick. A string of some kind is typically drawn on the bow, allowing for a trigger to release an arrow or dart at the desired target.

As a unique international market, the antique armor, weapons and militaria auction calendar includes objects and variations of the crossbow of historical, technological, and material interest to a wide range of collectors.

Antique crossbows continue to have interest by the collecting community at auction and via private sale. Like most collectibles, age and condition are the most important factors which determine price and value. In an October 31 auction at Garth's Auctions in Delaware, Ohio, two antique crossbow lots, both German 18th century, both made of carved cherry and inlaid with ivory exceeded all estimates; they realized $1,998 and $2,350 respectively, almost tripling their high end estimates of $800.
