Celestial globes been used since Classical Antiquity to determine the position of stars and constellations in the sky. The Sun, the Moon and planets are not shown because their positions vary in relation to the stars. Thales of Miletus, active in the 6th century B.C., is attributed with the creation of the first celestial globe, but the oldest in existence is the Farnese Globe from the 3rd century B.C. Auction highlights include an antique German Gilt Brass Celestial Globe sold by Christie’s London on July 8, 1999 for $240,275.
