Bowmore Whiskey
The Bowmore distillery was founded in 1779 and is located on the isle of Islay. Whisky made in Islay is often described as “peaty” which lends a smoky quality to the whisky. Bowmore is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Bowmore produces 12-,15-,18- and 25- year scotches aged in American oak casks.
Single malt scotch is defined as a whisky using malted barley as the singular ingredient, must be distilled in Scotland and must be aged in oak casks in Scotland for at minimum 3 years. Most of the barley for Bowmore distilleries is sourced from Islay Island though some is sourced from the mainland. Bowmore is one of only a few distilleries to produce floor malted barley.
Accolades include Distiller of the Year in 2000, 2002 and 2002 and multiple Best in Show and Double Gold awards. Auction highlights include a trilogy of vintage Bowmore spirits sold by Christie’s New York on November 14, 2009 for $21,600.
