In European carpets, Axminster refers generally to the style of carpet produced by Thomas Whitty from 1755 at the Axminster carpet factory in Devon, England. Formal, geometric and stately, Axminster carpets provided English households a domestic alternative to costly Persian carpets and rugs. Pile carpets continue to be produced in Axminster to this day, though most likely the result of a revival in the carpet-making industry in the 1930s.
