Arteluce was a lighting company founded in Milan in 1936 by Gino Sarfatti, an aeronautical engineer and modern lighting designer. During the 1950’s Arteluce commissioned many innovative, contemporary designers such as Franco Albini and Marco Zanuso, whose creative, architectural lighting designs created a modernist movement in the lighting industry that propelled Arteluce to popularity as a leading lighting design company. During this time, the company’s founder began to experiment with plexiglass and twenty years later he designed the first lamp to use halogen bulbs. Sarfatti alone experimented with innovative designs and materials, culminating in the development of over 400 lighting products. Throughout the mid 20th century Arteluce exhibited its work throughout Italy and abroad, winning awards and further recognition in the lighting design industry. In 1974 they became a part of the Flos lighting company, which continues to manufacture many original Arteluce designs today.”
