Armagnac is a distinctive kind of grape brandy produced in the Armagnac region in Gascony, southwest France. Its closest relative is Cognac, another grape brandy from the town of Cognac in France located about 100 miles north. Armagnac is the oldest brandy distilled in France and was often consumed for its therapeutic benefits. It is distilled from wine usually made from a blend of grapes which can include Ugni Blanc, Baco 22A, Folle Blanche or Colombard.

Armagnac was one of the first areas in France to begin distilling spirits. The brandies produced there have a lower profile than those from Cognac and the overall volume of production is far smaller since they are primarily made and sold by small producers. Unlike Cognac, Armagnac is only distilled once. The resulting spirit is then aged in oak barrels before release.

Like scotch and bourbon, Armagnac stops aging once it's removed from the oak barrel and is sold under several different classifications. When brandies of different ages have been blended, the age on the bottle refers to the youngest wine in the blend. A three star, or VS Armagnac is a mix of several Armagnacs that have seen at least two years of aging. For the VSOP, the aging is at least five years; and for XO, at least six. Hors d'âge means the youngest component in the blend is at least ten years old. Older and better Armagnacs are often sold as vintages, containing Armagnac from a single year which is noted on the bottle.
