Description: CLÉMENT, Nicolas, de Treille (16th century). Austrasiae reges et duces epigrammatis. Cologne [but Nancy or Pont-A-Mousson], 1591. 4o (208 x 143 mm). Large engraved printer's device on title and 63 engraved portraits in text by Pierre Woeiriot. 20th-century brown morocco, edges gilt, by Huser. Provenance: Sylvain Brunschwig (booklabel); acquired from Arthur Freeman, 1962. FIRST EDITION. This genealogical history of the dukes of Lorraine, written in Latin hexameters, is the work of a Lorraine author who was a close frond of Boissard, the antiquarian and poet, whom he mentions in his dedication. Clément died before the work was published--probably shortly after the dedication date of 1573--leaving the manuscript and copperplates to be discovered in 1591 by Sieur de Blondefontaine, who in turn entrusted them to his friend François Guibaudet of Dijon for publication. This Latin edition and a French translation were issued simultaneously. Beaupré and Didot suggest that the work was actually printed in Nancy or Pont-A-Mousson, not Cologne as stated on the title. This copy belongs to the issue in which Charles III appears wearing a plummed bonnet. In the other issue, he is seen with no headgear. This impressionistic view of a harbor scene "Le Pont Boïeldieu" by the French artist Pierre Jean Dumont was painted in oil around 1910. It is one of several depictions that Dumont created of the harbor in Rouen. With quick and broad brushstrokes Dumont skillfully depicts an impression of Rouen's active harbor. Pierre Dumont succeeds in giving this depiction of the harbor and the outlines of his home town a sentimental value, which is communicated to the viewer. Only a few years prior, Camille Pissarro also dedicated a series of artworks to Rouen's harbor. The painting is in original condition. The canvas shows a few small holes and one small tear. There is some craquelure and the canvas shows material loss where mounted to the stretcher frame. The canvas shows one patch on the back. The dimensions are: 66 x 80 cm. It is signed in the lower left hand corner with "Pierre Dumont". Pierre Jean Dumont (1884-1936) Pierre Dumont was born in Paris in 1884, but when his father was appointed the professor of natural history at Rouen's University the family moved there. He studied at the "Académie Impressioniste" under Joseph Delattre, where he also exhibited his work as from 1906 onwards. He mostly painted Rouen, where he worked and lived all his life until his death in 1936.

Description: Massive in size, it is difficult to comprehend that a toy like this was ever created for a child, more likely an adult male who had dashed dreams of becoming a sea captain or naval commander. One can only imagine the cost of a toy like this back in the earlier part of the 20th century! Obviously a toy of this nature would not have been easy for a youth to handle as it is both heavy and elaborate. Typical of Marklin of the period (1910-1915), their craftsmen have reproduced in toy form a realistic copy of battleships of the time. This toy has been buried away for decades and has recently come to the market as a fresh find and never having been in a collector's hands prior to this. A plethora of turrets with guns in various sizes littered the deck as well as walkways above the superstructure. Two massive stacks protrude well above the deck line, and one can only imagine the impressive nature this boat would exude while in the water. Most likely the boat was powered by a clockwork mechanism (mechanism no longer present), which would have been attached to the two propellers. The upper deck lifts off to expose the interior of the hull. Not only did this boat have numerous cannons, but there are a number of lifeboats as well, which unfortunately are missing. A fair amount of original paint still remains with heavier paint loss to the tangerine deck and dark blue water line/hull. "HMS Russell" is emblazoned on the left and right side of bow. This boat has in excess of 40 clips on her deck under which one could insert sailors. Overall the boat needs some cosmetic attention and replacing missing parts, but when completed, this toy would be a spectacular showpiece central to any collection. The HMS Russell was commissioned in February 1903, having taken four years to build. She was a Duncan-class pre-Dreadnaught of the Royal Navy and saw service in the Mediterranean. She met her fate when she was sunk by two mines laid by a German U-Boat off the coast of Malta on April 27, 1916. SIZE: 46" l. CONDITION: Overall fair to good. 1-12829

Description: An intricate Marklin train station scaled for either 1 or 2 gauge trains, this station is basically in as-found, all original condition. Typical of Marklin in the early 20th century, this hand painted station, which was made for the American or European market is painted in a variety of colors. Included is the rear passenger awning under which train arrivals and departures would occur. Candle illumination on enclosed station areas with light shining through windows that have acid etched glass (some glasses missing). Fairly large and grandiose, the station measures 17" wide x 21" deep (including awning). The station retains one original crank bell on front platform. SIZE: As stated above. CONDITION: As described above, a good cleaning would bring out the vibrancy of the paint. Lacking one rack of insulators on roof. Center spire possibly replaced. It appears to have some inpainting to canopy post supports. 1-12935

Cars are in good to very good original condition without interiors. All cars are equipped with lighting. Boxes are intact and four of the five have paper labels at each end. One box missing end flap, otherwise good and solid. Die cast trucks with die cast wheels (a couple wheels have fatigue/loss). SIZE: 17" l. CONDITION: As stated above.
