Urban Art
Urban art is a term used to describe a style and movement in the visual and performing arts that relates to cities and city life. Urban art is sometimes called “street art.” It is closely linked with Graffiti Art in its stylistic overlaps and urban context, but extends beyond the application of a work of art onto a piece of public or private property.
Urban artists work in a variety of media including stenciling, wheat pasting, photography, graffiti, graphic, web, interior and industrial design. Stylistically, Urban Art is often cartoon based, marked by bright and bold colors, and simplified subject matter. Artists often aim to satirize politics, culture and ethics. This use of clear subject matter differentiates urban art from graffiti, which is often more abstract.
While Urban Arts’ initial appeal focused on male teenagers, it is now sold and exhibited in galleries, auction-houses and displayed collections world-wide. The production of Urban Art has an unlimited number of functions. For example, Urban Art is used by such bands as Gorillaz to promote their music where the band members are animated in the Urban Art style. Likewise it is often used in ad campaigns to promote skate-boarding and street athletics. Works by such artists as Banksy have also been sold on site where the winning bidder is left to salvage the work from the wall. He and other urban artists also create portable works for sale at auction and mass produce images using prints and stencils. Through this variety of media the artists reach a wider fan base and turn away from the identification of urban and graffiti art as vandalism.
Notable urban artists include: Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Adam Neate, Beejoir, Jose Parla, Antony Micallef, Nick Walker, Dan Baldwin, Faile, Anthony Lister, Sweet Toof, Eelus, Mr.Jago, Goldie, Guy Denning, Russell Young, Dora (1977), Seen, Jef Aerosol, Ryca, Adek and Ben Slow. (hide)
