New English Art Club
English exhibiting society. The club was founded in 1886 by a generation of British artists who looked to France for their inspiration. They had originally intended to call themselves the ‘Society of Anglo-French Painters’. They felt that their work was being neglected by the Royal Academy, and the club’s constitution, based on the method of jury selection at the Paris Salon, ensured a more democratic selection procedure than at the Academy.
