Installation Art
Installation art describes an artistic genre of site-specific, three-dimensional works designed to transform the perception of a space. It is a genre and art form associated with the Postmodern Movement.
Installation art can be either temporary or permanent. Works are often constructed in exhibition spaces such as museums and galleries, or in other public and private spaces. The genre incorporates a broad range of materials, which may be natural or man-made, but are often chosen for their evocative qualities. Multimedia is frequently used including video, sound, performance, immersive virtual reality and the internet. Installation pieces are often site-specific in that they are designed to exist only in the space for which they were created. The term Installation art is typically applied to interior installations; exterior installations are referred to as Land Art. There is however overlap between the two in regards to form and function. Both leave space and time as their only dimensional constants thus implying the dissolution of the line between art and life.
Notable installation artists include: Rachel Whiteread, Sandy Skoglund, Richard Wilson, Tracy Emin, Gabriel Orozco, Amich Kapoor, Louise Nevelson, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Joseph Beuys, Bruce Nauman, Olafur Eliasson, Liam Gillick, Jim Lambie, Zoe Leonard, Berlinde De Bruyckere and Ugo Rondinone.
