Silver
Silver is a white, lustrous material, and the most conductive of any metal in the table of elements. Due of its beauty, malleability, and shine, silver has long been mined, refined and traded around the world for use in the minting of coins, the making of jewelry, and especially on account of silver’s antiseptic properties, in the production of utensils for eating and drinking.
The purity of antique silver ranges greatly according to the era and country where it was made; often considered as good as currency itself, silver standards are strictly measured and usually documented by accompanying marks. Coin silver, referring to the ancient standard used for coinage, is composed of almost 90% pure silver and for that reason is not particularly durable. Russian silver is by contrast much firmer at 84% and typically bears the mark 84, the remainder of the alloy being comprised of copper. In Britain and the United States, the standard fineness is traditionally 925 parts per thousand, resulting in an alloy commonly referred to as ‘Sterling’ or ‘Her Majesty’s’, or simply ‘solid’ silver.
