Lamps

Ever since the age of Prometheus and the man’s discovery of fire, lamps and lighting have been essential, almost necessary fixtures of the places and spaces where people have congregated, lived, worked and conducted affairs. From the earliest known examples of oil and fat lamps, through to the invention of electricity and fiber optic technology in the modern era, lamps have been prized for both their basic function as much as for their decorative potential.

Whether purely functional or mostly decorative, the enormous range of lamps and lighting in existence accounts for the tremendous variety of situations they were made for. While some types of lamps and lighting are collected out of interest for the history of the technology behind them, some of the most interesting and beautiful lamps on the antique market today are those that make use of their materials or cast light in particularly interesting way. Among the latter of these types, the tradition of stained glass lamps making that developed at the beginning of the twentieth century was excelled at by numerous firms such as Handel, Bradley & Hubbard, Duffner & Kimberley, but most famous of all were the workshops of Tiffany Studios, which introduced some of the most remarkable innovation in glass and lighting. The record auction price for a Tiffany Studios lamp was set in 2006, when a magnolia themed bronze floor lamp achieved $1,472,000, at a Christie's auction in New York.

Pound for pound one of the most profitable items to sell at auction, in recent years collectors, bidders and major auctions houses alike have begun to pay increased attention to lamps as an area of collecting and will often hold special lamp and lighting sales. Auctions can be a great way to both research and add to your knowledge of the area, and this collector's is designed to serve as an online resource to do just that. Navigate among the collections below featuring Tiffany Studios lamps, fairy lamps, Handel lamps, Moravian stars and much more!
