Glass
Admired for its natural translucence, textural beauty and potential for plasticity in the fine and decorative arts, glass is a substance that has captured the imagination of human beings for thousands and thousands of years.
In scientific language the term refers categorically to any type of amorphous solid material capable of undergoing a glass transition, by which a liquid substance is converted into semisolid state through impact, compression or an cooling. Glass has been the material of choice of cultures for objects both functional and of beauty, from windows, drinking vessels and jewelry, to lamp-work paper weights and large scale decorative sculpture. Whether blown, poured, molded, cast or enameled, both industrial and studio art examples of the material remain popular objects of desire.
Glassmaking traditions have flourished and evolved for centuries, the earliest artificial examples being semi-translucent beads made around 3500 BC in eastern Mesopotamia. Notably too, collector’s also do prize natural glass formed by meteoric impact, such as a numerous Libyan specimens to have appeared on the market in recent years. In Europe, the glassmaking traditions in Italy, notably in Venice and Murano, France, Austria, Bohemia and Britain continue to inspire contemporary artists working in the medium today.
