Carpets & Oriental Rugs
Although historians have not been able to pinpoint exactly when knotted rugs were first made, it's likely that woven coverings became more common as farming increased and the use of sheared wool and silk became mediums for weaving. Oriental carpet weaving as an art form, however, can be accurately traced back to the 5th century BC.
Rugs and carpets have been produced the world over for thousands of years. Common types of construction include woven, knotted, needle felt and hooked rugs and carpets. Prior to mechanization and mass-production, most carpets were woven by hand on a loom. This made rugs and carpets valuable commodities and they were more often than not found decorating tables instead of covering floors.
