Description: (British, 1774-1837) PORTRAIT OF A BAY HUNTER IN AN EXTENSIVE LANDSCAPE WITH THE ARTIST AT WORK signed, inscribed and dated CH Schwanfelder Pinxt./1826/Animal Painter to His Majesty (lower left) oil on canvas 43 by 59in. 109.2 by 149.9cm. Born in Leeds, Schwanfelder was a leading figure in portraiture and sporting painting. His greatest achievement was being appointed animal painter to both George III and George IV, a position the artist regarded so highly that he inscribed the present picture Animal Painter to His Majesty. Schwanderfelder was an active member of the Royal Academy and the British Institution, exhibiting his pictures continuously from 1809 to 1826.
