Description: PORTRAIT OF ROMANY MARIE signed; dated on the reverse, oil on canvas. 36 by 27 in. 91.4 by 68.6 cm. Romany Marie was well-known and beloved by two generations of intellectuals in New York's Greenwich Village. Her cafe, which bore her name, was a frequent haunt for struggling writers, poets, artists and scientists, who were assured a good meal whether they were able to pay for it or not. Her patrons included the likes of Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Mark Tobey, Eugene O'Neill and Buckminster Fuller. Provenance: Downtown Gallery, New York; Mr. R.H.
