Description: Late 18th / early 19th century, each with a flambeau finial atop a removable domed cover over a spiral-fluted and gadrooned vasiform body lined with zinc, on a square plinth fitted with a tap, above a pedestal; the pedestal of the first with a single hinged door with three paneled false drawer fronts opening to a zinc-lined cupboard fitted with two slatted wooden shelves, over a square base enclosing a sliding drawer fitted with a holder for a burner; the pedestal of the second with a drawer over a hinged door enclosing a cupboard above a further drawer incorporating the square base and opening to reveal a zinc-lined compartment divided into six wells; 2 pcs, each 61'' H x 17.5'' W x 17'' D, est: $2500/3500. Note: ''Pedestals and vases'' such as the present pair are a furniture type discussed in George Hepplewhite's ''The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide'', first published in London in 1788. The work illustrates six examples of the type. According to Hepplewhite they ''Are much used in spacious dining rooms, where the last-described kind of sideboards are chosen; at the end of which they are placed. One pedestal serves as a plate warmer, being provided with racks and a stand for a heater; and is lined with strong tin; the other pedestal is used as a pot cupboard. / The vases may be used to hold water for the use of the butler, or iced water for drinking, which is inclosed (sic) in an inner partition, the ice surrounding it; or may be used as knife-cases...'' (Third edition, 1794, p.7, plates 35 and 36).

Condition Report: Overall good condition. General marks, scratches, wear, nicks and shrinkage cracks commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound. The rear panels later replacements.
