Description: Emerald Palace by Debra Ann Steidel is a porcelain vessel with sculptured porcelain lid and crystalline glaze and measures 23 X 12 X 18.<br /> <br /> In 1974, at the young age of 18, I discovered my lifes passion, Clay. Since those early years, I have evolved  through many levels of skill, refinement and growth. Making a living as an artist has not been an easy journey.  It has been one of triumph and tears, joy and hard work. It is a way of life I would never trade.<br /> <br /> My medium is porcelain clay. Each piece is an original design and made one by one.   Starting with a ball of porcelain, I throw (or form) each vessel on the potters wheel. This process is made even more difficult as porcelain clay has the consistency of cream cheese.  When the pot has reached  a leather hard state, a foot is trimmed on the bottom which refines the profile of the vessel. Once thoroughly dried, pots are placed in a kiln to be fired to a low temperature  called bisque; hardening them just enough to handle the process of glazing.  After removal from the kiln, glaze is applied and the ware is fired once more to approximately 2300 degrees.   Although they resemble bronze, I individually sculpt each lid out of porcelain, apply a metallic glaze and fire each along side their paired vessel. These imaginatively created, miniature sculptures have become a trademark to my work.<br /> <br /> The type of glaze I use is called a crystalline glaze. Its name is derived from actual crystals forming on the surface during the firing. Robert Rankine (1868-1941) of St Kilda was born in Chatham, Kent, England on 29 July 1868. From service records it appears that Rankine's first commission was as 2nd Lieutenant in the Militia in December 1901. On 10 May 1906 as Lieutenant of 6th Infantry Regiment, Commonwealth Military Forces, Victoria he was appointed militia acting adjutant. Rankine was 46 years old on 9 October 1914 when he enlisted as major of A Company, 14th Battalion, a Victorian unit of the 4th Brigade, commanded by Colonel John Monash. The 14th Battalion departed Broadmeadows by train for Port Melbourne on 22 December, and then embarked aboard the Ulysses. In Egypt, Rankine was appointed commander of A Company which departed Alexandria on April 12 on troop carrier SS Seeang Choon. On 26 April, Company A landed on shore under schrapnel fire and waited in reserve. The following day Rankine marched with his Company up to support the garrison at Quinn's Post, the most advanced Allied position at Anzac, which was held by a small group of men from the1st and 3rd Brigades, some New Zealanders and a New Zealand machine gun. The Australian and Turkish lines were in close proximity and the Australians repelled repeated attacks until relief arrived on 29 May. During this time the 14th battalion lost nearly one third of its men.Shortly after Rankine was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and temporarily placed in command of the 14th Battalion. After Gallipoli, Rankine was invalided to England suffering from severe dysentery. He later returned to the Western Front in France, appointed in command of 39th Battalion A.I.F. However he continued to suffer from ill health and was eventually evacuated in December 1916 with severe myalgia.

Several stains. Not mentioned in "Haggadot Kibutziot" by Nathan Steiner.2. Passover Haggadah. Ayelet HaShachar, 1943.. Non-traditional Haggadah, with illustrations. The Haggadah includes texts concerning actual matters amongst them the Holocaust: "Our heart is terrified - when we imagine how wild beasts abuse women, elderly people and children...the crying of the tortured, victims of the Nazis who die in ghettoes, who are chocking in trains and are exterminated by infernal machines. And the slaughter continues...". [17] leaves, 34 cm. Good condition. Tears at borders of covers and leaves. Minor stains. Corner of back cover is missing.
