She is depicted underway in stormy seas with crew of 21 on deck and aloft. In original ornate gilt gesso frame with tag reading 'Ship Arthur Sewall, Sailed from Delaware March 1907, and never heard from'. The ship was the namesake of the Bath, Maine shipyard owner and President of Maine Central Railroad. His yard was the only in the US to build steel hulled sailing ships. The 'Arthur Sewell', 332' long, 3209 GRT, was built in 1899, sailed for Seattle Apr 2, 1907, recorded as missing Feb 5, 1908, presumed lost off Cape Horn. She stopped in San Francisco (Coulter's home base) on her trips to Japan. OS: 36" x 52". SS: 25 1/2" x 41 1/2". Fine, untouched condition, needs cleaning. Loss to frame corners.
