Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

In fede, Torino 31 luglio 1997 Angelo Dragone"

1878 ANTONIO MACEO y GRAJALES SIGNED LETTER

Lot 754: 1878 ANTONIO MACEO y GRAJALES SIGNED LETTER

by Regency-Superior Auctioneers

May 24, 2013, 9:00 AM EST

St. Louis, MO, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Lt. General Jose Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales (1845-96), second-in-command of Cuban Army of Independence. Maceo was one of the most noteworthy guerrilla leaders in 19th century Latin America. Letter (ALS) 8vo, 2pps, each 5"x8", signed Antonio Maceo. Letter is written to Senor Hilario Cisneros in Spanish. Uniformly browned with light stains, reverse has been expertly strengthened with clear archival paper. Maceo had been in exile for 7 months after the end of the unsuccessful Ten Years War (1868-1878) when he wrote this letter. In 1895, Antonio and Jose defeated the Spaniards, but both were killed the following year in the struggle for Cuban independence. The death of Antonio, a great combat soldier (he had been wounded 26 times in combat) and cavalry commander, was hailed by the Spaniards as end of the War. Instead, Maceo's death only strengthened the resolve of the revolutionaries. (University Archives LOA).
