Description: Hendrik Van der Straaten (Dutch/English, c1665-1722). "A Gift for the Baby". Oil on canvas. c1692. Signed lower right. Good condition; frame in poor condition. A rare work by the elusive artist; precious little of his work has survived. Henrick van Straaten was born somewhere in the Northern Netherlands (most likely in Haarlem) around 1665. He became a member of the Haarlem guild of St. Luke in 1687. His known oeuvre shows an awareness of the works of Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683) and other Haarlem-based Italianate painters. Also known as De la Rue (Straat is Dutch for street), the artist immigrated to England at some stage and is considered a pioneer of English landscape painting. Image size: 16 x 24 in. (406 x 610 mm). Description: A deed from Philadelphia County dated August 27th, 1781. The granter is Joseph Reed, President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, the grantee is Joseph Wilson who was a Philadelphia merchant. The witness is Timothy Matlack (1730 - 1829) who was the engrosser of the Declaration of Independence and Assistant Secretary of the Continental Congress. This vellum document is partly printed and partly hand written, it is likely that the calligraphy was executed by Matlack. The content of the deed deals with four lots in the General Plan of Philadelphia situated on the north side of Walnut Street and the east side of Ninth street . The reverse side endorses the deed from Joseph Wilson to John Brown dated August 31st, 1781. It is signed by Joseph Wilson and witnessed by James Crawford and William Lawrence.

Condition Report: Very good, some edge loss near the seal. There are also small holes at the center crease.
