Lot 17: 1968 Ferrari 330GTC Berlinetta

2013
United Kingdom
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: 'At the top - at the absolute top - in the automotive enthusiasts' hierarchy of the cars of the world, there is only one. Ferrari. Is there really any question?' Thirty-plus years after Car & Driver magazine voiced that rhetorical enquiry the answer, of course, remains the same. And the car that prompted that eulogy? The Ferrari 330GTC. Intended to fill a gap in Ferrari's line-up between the four-seat 330GT 2+2 and the racer-on-the-road 275GTB, the two-seat 330GTC debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966 and was essentially a closed version of the 275GTS. Pininfarina's understated coachwork combined elements of the latter at the rear, with touches of the 500 Superfast at the front. Few would disagree with Car & Driver's opinion that the result was most agreeable. 'The GTC is a tasteful blend of the mean-and-low look of Ferrari competition GT cars, with the elegance of super-luxury street Ferraris of the past. Detail work, finish, panel fit, every aspect is superlative.' Beneath the 330GTC's bonnet resided the 4.0-litre, 300bhp version of Ferrari's familiar, two-cam, 60-degree V12, as used in the 330GT 2+2. The short (94.5" wheelbase) chassis followed Ferrari's established practice of tying together sturdy oval-section main tubes in a steel spaceframe, while the suspension was independent all round by means of wishbones and coil springs. First introduced on a road-going Ferrari (the 275GTB) in 1964, the rear suspension incorporated the five-speed gearbox in a transaxle, an arrangement that created a better balanced car and one that gave its driver, 'the wonderful sense of knowing just exactly what's going on between one's posterior and the pavé.' Much development work had concentrated on the reduction of noise levels in the cabin, which was luxuriously equipped in the best Gran Turismo manner: leather seats, electric windows and heated rear screen were standard; radio, air conditioning and Borrani wire wheels the options. With a top speed in excess of 250km/h, excellent ride comfort and sure-footed handling, Ferrari could justifiably claim the 330GTC to be the finest of high-speed conveyances for two people and their luggage. According to Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, chassis number '11327' left the Maranello factory finished in Bleu Ribot with beige Connolly leather interior and was delivered new to the official Ferrari dealer in Milan, Gastone Crepaldi. First owned in Brescia by a Mr Lucchini, the Ferrari was sold in September 1968 to Ms Jane Ford in the USA, who kept it until 1975. The car then passed to Matteo Tschudi of Vasello, Italy. Next owned by Mr H Peyer of Baden, Switzerland, it passed to Nicholas Rommel in May 1981 (at 66,903 kilometres) and was restored over the course of the next three years (invoices on file). Acquired from Carlo Perego by the current vendor in 2003, the car is currently finished in Bordeaux livery with matching leather interior. Delivering a supreme level of comfort together with Ferrari and Pininfarina's unsurpassed style, '11327' is described as in generally good condition and offered with its original tool kit, owner's handbook, service manual and spare parts catalogue. Accompanying documentation consists of sundry restoration invoices, service records, Swiss Carte Grise and technical inspection papers.

Lot 33: 1968 Ferrari 365GT 2+2 Berlinetta
by Bonhams
2013
United Kingdom
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: By the mid-1960s, 50 percent of all Ferraris produced were being built with four seats, and following on from the success of its first such model, the 250GTE of 1960, Ferrari introduced the 330GT 2+2 in 1964. Its replacement, the 365GT 2+2, was launched at the Paris Salon in October 1967. Sleekly styled by Pininfarina in the manner of the limited edition 500 Superfast, the 365GT 2+2 was the most refined Ferrari to date. As well as featuring independent suspension all round (for the first time on a Ferrari 2+2) it also boasted Koni's hydro-pneumatic self-levelling system at the rear. Further refinements included mounting the engine and drive-train in rubber bushes to insulate the car's occupants from noise and vibration, and offering power-assisted steering and air conditioning as standard equipment. The well-proven 4.4-litre V12 engine was coupled to a five-speed gearbox, and the car's blistering performance was restrained by Girling ventilated disc brakes all round. Endowed with fine handling and a supple ride, the 365GT 2+2 was rated by Car magazine as, 'the most civilised Ferrari yet.' Chassis number '11799' was sold new in Paris on the 26th November 1968 and has been registered in France ever since. In 1990, by which time it had covered 30,096 kilometres, the car benefited from a partial restoration including a major overhaul of all the mechanicals, new paintwork and an interior re-trim in Connolly leather. The Ferrari's subsequent owners have scrupulously maintained it in very good order, covering only some 24,000 kilometres in the 21 years since the restoration's completion. This careful ownership is reflected in the car's current fine condition; indeed, it could easily pass for one restored relatively recently. We are advised that the paintwork remains in good condition and that the re-trimmed interior possesses a wonderful patina, with no cracked leather. The engine has benefited from regular servicing and is running sweetly; the gearbox shifts smoothly at all speeds; and all the electrical equipment is working normally. The current owner bought the Ferrari in January 2011 and has only decided to sell it to finance the purchase of an older model. There are of 60 pages of restoration invoices on file and the car also comes with valid French Carte Grise.

Lot 1173: BMW R 71 with sidecar
by Czerny's International Auction House
May 26, 2013, 2:00 PM CET
Sarzana (SP), Italy
Estimated Price: €15,000 - €20,000
Description: This 1940 BMW R71 is among a small group of bikes produced for civilian use during World War II in Germany. Designed primarily as a sidecar motorcycle (easy to detach), with a powerful engine (746-cc, 16 Kw) that made 22 horsepower and plenty of torque for sidecar use that could reach about 125 km/h, proved to be the last side-valve that BMW ever produced. This model was produced from 1938 to 1941 (about 3000 pieces). In May of 1941 the company discontinued all civilian motorcycles in order to produce only aircraft engines and its military-spec R75 motorcycles as Germany, fully engaged in conflict during that year, required war-related material. So successful were the BMWs as war-machines that the U.S. Army asked Harley-Davidson, Indian and Delco to produce a motorcycle similar to the side-valve BMW R71. Harley copied the BMW engine and transmission-simply converting metric measurements to inches-and produced the shaft-drive 750 cc (46 cubic inches) 1942 Harley-Davidson XA. Same thing happened in Russia with the 1941 Ural M72 and nowadays a copy of R 71 is still in production in China (Chang Jiang 750). As it is easy to see in many photographs of the time, this motorbike was mostly used by civilians but also by the Gestapo, the Feldgendarmerie and the Schutzstaffel (SS) officials. This fully restored motorcycle has Italian plate, it's certified and registered in the ASI (Autoclub Storico Italiano), has Italian/EU documents and it's approved for street use with or without sidecar (for this reason the carburetors are new in order to permit a safe and comfortable drive). Last official mot was few months ago. This great 73 years old bike is in great conditions and perfectly working!provenance: Southern Germany dating: second quarter of the 20th Century
