Description: Edwin Willard Deming (1860-1942), "Children of the Lodge" watercolor and gouache on board. Sight: 14.25"H x 22.25"W; Frame: 23"H x 31"W. Signed lower right, "E.W. Deming with insignia". A multi-faceted artist best known for his depictions of Native Americans and wildlife. He received training at the Art Students League and spent a year in Paris where he studied with Boulanger and Lefebvre. In 1887 on his first trip to the American West he visited the Apache and Pueblo Indians in the Southwest, and the Umatillas in Oregon. In 1893, Deming and fellow artist DeCost Smith spent time among the Sioux and Crow Indians to write and illustrate about life among these people for Outing magazine.

Among the artist's paintings of Indian life are his murals for The American Museum of Natural History. Although the subjects of his small bronzes were usually animals, the present bronze, which is a reduction of a sundial created for a garden in Fairfield, Connecticut, returns to his favorite theme.
