Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: AFTER THE INTERROGATION signed oil on canvas 321/4 by 48 in. 81.9 by 121.9 cm. "Laurens was a learned man who took pleasure in digging up little-known historical facts which he illustrated with great attention to detail. Particularly attracted to tragic events of the Middle Ages, he undertook a subject only after immersing himself in specialized texts. The source for the subject of this painting was Jean Barthelemy Hareau's Bernard Delicieux et l'Inquisition albigeoise (1330-1320). Haureau, like Laurens, was violently anticlerical, and Laurens had drawn inspiration from this particular work twice before. This painting was the third in a series [of three] devoted to the life of the Franciscan Delicieux, who had denounced the cruelty of the repression (ordered by the Inquisition and carried out by the Dominicans) which had been forced upon the south of France at the end of the twelfth century after the Catharist schism was crushed'' (Alain Klepper, in The Other Nineteenth Century, p. 134). The first painting in the series, La delivrance des emmures de Carcassonne (The Release of the Prisoners of Carcassonne), exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1879, is now in the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Carcassonne. This scene of emancipation was followed by L'interrogatoire devant le tribunal de l'Inquisition (The Interrogation before the Court of the Inquisition), exhibited at the Salon of 1881, and now in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Despite torture, Delicieux refused to admit to any of the charges laid against him, and with bloodied hands and feet was returned to his cell, the subject of the present work. Provenance: Noah L. Butkin, Cleveland, Ohio Shepherd Gallery, New York (by 1977; as Presentation of the Body of Saint Francis to the Abbess Saint Claire) Acquired by the present owner in 1977 Exhibited: Ottawa, The National Gallery of Canada; Victoria; Edmonton; Calgary; Montreal; Toronto: The Other Nineteenth Century, 1978-9, No. 43 Literature: Emmanuel Fougerat, Jean-Paul Laurens, Album d'art retrospectif, No. 8, series Drogues et Peintures, Paris, 1937, Pl. VII, p. 13 Louise d'Argencourt and Douglas Druik, ed., The Other Nineteenth Century, Ottawa, 1978, pp. 134-5, illustrated p. 135.
