Condition Report: Frame rubbing resulting in a few small losses along the outer edges. Dirty, yellowed varnish. 3/8 x 1/4 inch piece of paper with the number 343 typed onto it has been adhered to the surface of the painting just above the signature. Description: L'Amour Bless signed 'Jules-LeFebvre.' (upper right) oil on canvas 75 x 49 in. (190.5 x 124.5 cm.) NOTES Jules LeFbvre began his studies under Lon Cogniet at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was a frequent contributor to the annual Salon following his debut in 1855 and in 1861 won the prestigious Prix de Rome which allowed him to study in Italy for a year. His paintings earned him numerous decorations, culminating in his being awarded the Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle in 1891. Renowned for his portraits and genre scenes, LeFbvre's atelier at the Acadmie Julien attracted many of the finest young artists of the time, including the American Elizabeth Jane Gardner (see lot ) who later married William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Bouguereau was also an instructor at the Acadmie Julien and the two artists shared much in common in their work. As with Bouguereau's paintings (see lots ), LeFbvre's works were executed with a high degree of finish and favored mythological subjects. His awareness of Classical sculpture is evident in Cupid's contraposto pose and the frieze of the marble base shown in L'Amour Blesse. Moreover, he was a superb draftsman who paid careful attention to the rendering of figures and the naturalistic depiction of their environs. In L'Amour Blesse LeFbvre creates a sense of realism to the scene by painting the figures as almost life sized. The narrative of L'Amour Blesse is based on Greek mythology in which Cupid's mischievous antics are often reprimanded by Venus, his mother. The rose pedals scattered in the reflecting pool and the broken arrows on the ground borrow from the iconography of Renaissance paintings of this subject. However in L'Amour Blesse LeFbvre has chosen to depict the moment immediately following the punishment as indicated through the fresh tears on Cupid's cheeks and the consolatory gesture of Venus.
