Description: PANDORA signed oil on panel 38 by 29ain. 96.5 by 74.9cm. In Greek mythology, Pandora was created by Zeus as vengeance against the titan Prometheus, who championed humankind against the power of the gods. Pandora was endowed with every human charm and sent not to Prometheus (who was too cunning to accept such a dangerous gift), but to his fickle brother Epimetheus. Pandora brought with her a jar containing all kinds of evils and diseases hitherto unknown to mortals. She opened it, and all flew out, with the exception of Hope, which was left inside, under the lid, as a consolation for mankind. Pandora's jar seems to have become a "box" in post-classical times by a confusion with the box which Psyche was forbidden to open in the story in Apuleius' Golden Ass. More than one version of Pandora exist. By now hors concours, in other words exempt from Salon jury selection, Lefebvre chose this composition by which to be represented at the 1877 Salon.

Description: L'Amour Bless signed 'Jules-LeFebvre.' (upper right) oil on canvas 75 x 49 in. (190.5 x 124.5 cm.) NOTES Jules LeFbvre began his studies under Lon Cogniet at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was a frequent contributor to the annual Salon following his debut in 1855 and in 1861 won the prestigious Prix de Rome which allowed him to study in Italy for a year. His paintings earned him numerous decorations, culminating in his being awarded the Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle in 1891. Renowned for his portraits and genre scenes, LeFbvre's atelier at the Acadmie Julien attracted many of the finest young artists of the time, including the American Elizabeth Jane Gardner (see lot ) who later married William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Bouguereau was also an instructor at the Acadmie Julien and the two artists shared much in common in their work. As with Bouguereau's paintings (see lots ), LeFbvre's works were executed with a high degree of finish and favored mythological subjects. His awareness of Classical sculpture is evident in Cupid's contraposto pose and the frieze of the marble base shown in L'Amour Blesse. Moreover, he was a superb draftsman who paid careful attention to the rendering of figures and the naturalistic depiction of their environs. In L'Amour Blesse LeFbvre creates a sense of realism to the scene by painting the figures as almost life sized. The narrative of L'Amour Blesse is based on Greek mythology in which Cupid's mischievous antics are often reprimanded by Venus, his mother. The rose pedals scattered in the reflecting pool and the broken arrows on the ground borrow from the iconography of Renaissance paintings of this subject. However in L'Amour Blesse LeFbvre has chosen to depict the moment immediately following the punishment as indicated through the fresh tears on Cupid's cheeks and the consolatory gesture of Venus.
