Description: The Tambourine Girl signed 'S.Anderson' (lower right) oil on canvas 13 x 12 in. (35 x 30.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 27 June 1978, lot 71. NOTES Sophie Anderson was the daughter of the French architect Charles Gengembre and his English wife. She was brought up in Paris and initially studied under Baron Charles de Steuben but in the wake of the Revolution of 1848 the family emigrated to America, living first in Cincinatti, then in Pittsburgh, where she established a reputation as a painter of portraits. Following her marriage to the landscape painter Walter Anderson in 1854 she moved to England, exhibiting for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1855. From 1878 onwards she also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery. During the 1870s and 1880s, the couple lived for long periods on Capri, and it is probable that the present picture dates from their stay on that island.
