Description: Attribué à Jérôme Martin LANGLOIS (1779-1838). Apelle et Campaspe, en grisaille. Sur sa toile et son châssis d'origine 31 x 39 cm. Au revers, sur le châssis, une étiquette manuscrite: Alexandre et Appelle/ n° 34 Jérôme Martin Langlois expose un tableau de ce sujet au Salon de 1817. Apelle peint le portrait de l'une des maîtresses d'Alexandre le Grand, Campaspe, que d'autres nomment Pankaspé. Il fut sans doute le premier peintre officiel de l'histoire de la peinture occidentale, puisque Alexandre le Grand publia un décret qui interdisait à quiconque de le peindre à l'exception d'Apelle. Au cours de séances de pose, Apelle ne put cacher le désir que provoquait la beauté de son modèle. Lorsque le portrait fut achevé, Pline rapporte qu'Alexandre fit don de sa maîtresse mais qu'il garda le tableau.
